Late symptoms of lyme disease
Lyme disease infection is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is found in small animals like mice. The lyme disease symptoms usually fall into three distinct stages – early, mid and late. The organs affected later may lead to the following conditions:
o Facial palsy is paralysis of the facial nerve that causes the facial muscles to be uneven (This may get better without treatment.)
o Meningitis causes headache, fever, and stiff neck
o Nerve inflammation causes numbness and tingling in the arms or legs
o Brain swelling (encephalitis) causes learning difficulties, confusion, and dementia
The symptoms of mid-stage Lyme disease usually develop many weeks, or sometimes several months, after being bitten by an infected tick. However, they usually only affect people who were not treated with antibiotics at an early stage of the disease.
